Many of us have had that New Year’s resolution to start working out again. We feel motivated, join a gym, go a couple of times in January, and by March you forget you even signed up for a gym membership.
Gyms can be useful and fun, but going to the gym regularly can be time consuming or expensive. And sometimes we are just way too busy or lazy to set aside an entire hour to workout, even at home.
That’s why I like finding ways to stay active in the home that are quick, easy, and don’t feel like a regular workout.
There’s plenty of ways to stay active in the home that are actually easy and, do i dare say, fun?
1. Quick Workouts
Now I know even the mention of a home workout can somehow seem both boring and exhausting. But there are plenty of apps and online videos that have quick workouts. I love incorporating mini workouts throughout my day as opposed to setting out an entire hour. I’ve done workouts that are as short as 4 minutes that still have me feeling the burn.
2. Fun Workouts
There are tons of fun workout videos online that don’t feel like traditional workouts. There are dancing workouts, kick boxing, family cardio workouts, partner workouts, just to name a few. It is much easier to stick to working out if the workout is fun.
3. Stretching
On days where I’m feeling pretty lazy I will stretch. I not only feel great after, but I also burned calories doing it. Once again there are many videos online and apps that have follow along stretching.
4. Fun Equipment
Having some fun equipment in the home can help you burn some calories without feeling like you are working out. Using a hoola hoop or bouncing on a mini trampoline can make you feel like a kid again. There are many pieces of equipment out there that are much more fun to use than weights. Some of my absolute favorites are:
5. Clean and Organize
Times when you do not feel like working out but you want to be active, are perfect times to clean your home. Cleaning and organizing can burn calories while also taking care of your home. If you search online how many calories some household chores burn, you’d be surprised.
If cleaning or organizing feels too overwhelming, set a timer for 15-20 minutes and clean as fast as you can. Most of the time you will continue once the timer stops, but even if you don’t, you still moved your body for 15 minutes and cleaned your home.
6. Cook or Bake
Cooking at home is usually much healthier and cheaper than ordering in or going out to eat. But it also burns calories as well. Even small things like chopping or peeling vegetables burns calories. On days where you have more time try baking your own bread or pizza by hand. It is not as difficult as it sounds, but all the kneading and rolling of dough can really burn those calories.
7. Play
Being silly and playing is sadly something we rarely do anymore. Board games like Twister or a game of charades are fun games for the family that involve movement. A classic hide and seek game with the kids or giving your partner a nice massage are fun ways to incorporate some movement in your day.
8. Learn
Learning new skills can be exercise for your brain and body. Gardening, basic home repairs, or DIYs are just some examples of areas where new skills can be learned while keeping you active. Below are just two of many fantastic tools available online for beginners learning a new skill.
Try and find creative ways to keep your body moving throughout the day. You do not have to do an intense workout to be active. Being active can be easy and fun, you just have to find what you enjoy and what works best for your lifestyle.
I really hope you found this list useful. Comment below on some ways you like to stay active at home!
